Energy management & climate protection

Efficient energy use makes an essential contribution to resource and climate protection. Our activities in the energy efficiency area focus across the entire value creation chain – from research and development and resource-efficient production all the way to the transportation and use of our products.

Climate protection and energy efficiency objectives

In order to reduce our CO2 emissions, we have developed a climate protection strategy that has established groupwide targets for the year 2020. The main focus is on three areas: energy (optimizing building design and processes), logistics, and products. Our measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and Scope 2 as defined in the Greenhouse Gas Protocol) are grouped together in Efficient Cut of CO2 (ECCO2), an initiative that was launched in 2009. Knorr-Bremse also aims to implement an energy management system according to the international ISO 50001 standard at its most energy-intensive production facilities. By the end of 2016, 30 European legal entities within the Group had a certified ISO 50001 energy management System or had carried out energy audits according to ESOS (Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme, UK).

Group-wide energy management

Knorr-Bremse’s measures for reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions are based on the requirements of the international energy management standard (ISO 50001) for continuous improvement of the energy balance.

Energy consumption in production

Energy savings potential is systematically identified and implemented in all corporate divisions. We endeavor to continuously reduce energy consumption through systems engineering optimization, process selection and modernization measures at our sites.
