Rail Vehicle

Knorr-Bremse Rail Systems Japan, Ltd. first began its operations in 1992. Through the formation of its first joint venture, Koshin-Knorr Co, Ltd, the company started to experience an influx of compressor sales to East Japan Railway Company (JR East). Knorr-Bremse eventually took over the remaining shares of the joint venture which resulted in the establishment of Knorr-Bremse Rail Systems Japan Ltd. as a wholly-owned subsidiary specializing in the production of braking systems and products for a variety of rail vehicles in both domestic and international export markets. This set a strong foundation for the company to establish a progressive foothold in the Asia-Pacific market.

In 2004, Knorr-Bremse participated in the joint development of JR East's “FASTECH” high-speed Shinkansen test trains. Involvement in the test trains enabled JR East to become familiar with Knorr-Bremse's high-quality brake products. By 2010, it lead to a large order of brake components for the new generation of E5 Shinkansen trains, enabling Knorr-Bremse to become the supplier of major components for the new generation of Shinkansen trains. In order to compete with air travel, the speed of the train was also increased from 275 km/hr to 320 km/hr.

Knorr-Bremse will focus on expanding its business opportunities by enhancing the catering of customers’ quality and technology requirements that are unique to the Japanese market in order to sustain credibility and quality during the collaboration process.
